Ronald McDonald House
Vancouver, British Columbia | 2010-2014
When sick kids come to BC Children’s Hospital for extended treatment, Ronald McDonald House is a home away from home for their families. From design through to construction, PWL created outdoor spaces to promote play and healing for the 73 families who live there at any one time.
We designed series of courtyards and roof decks throughout the property to create opportunities for discovery and play, and also offer tranquil space in a stressful time. We selected equipment that’s easily sanitized to protect children when their health is most vulnerable. Custom features—like our human “snakes and ladders” game—allows every family member to get in on the play. Mirroring the sustainable infrastructure of the Michael Green-designed house, this project earned LEED Gold Certification.
